What is Engineering?

1. The term engineering is derived from the Latin word, ingenium.
2. It means brilliant idea, flash of genius.
3. The word was created in the 16th century and originally described as a
    profession that we would probably call an artistic invention.
4. Engineering combines applied mathematical, scientific, and technical
    principles, to yield tangible end products which can be made and
    constructed.
5. The art of engineering is to adopt a bright idea and, use money,
    materials, knowledgeable people, and pay a regard for the environment,
    in order to produce something the buyer wants at an affordable price.
6. There are a number of types of engineering (chemical, civil, mechanical,
    electrical, etc.) which apply to various areas of design and
    construction.
7. All engineering work is regulated by safety standards,
    and issues of patents and design protection may also arise.
