• gamma-ray burst (8 facts) - Short, intense, low-energy bursts, first recorded by the Vela satellite system on 1967 July 2. Their isotropic distribution suggests an extragalactic origin, but a galactic disk origin cannot be ruled out: there is a large increase in γ-ray flux in the direction of the galactic center.
