A number of research groups have found that the design and representation of a limitative set of concepts and relations, a so-called ontology, can contribute to sharing and reusing knowledge bases. However, there is no accepted method for designing and building such ontologies, nor is it clear how ontologies can be best evaluated. The aim of the workshop is to gather those researchers who have actually designed and implemented ontologies for the purpose of improved reuse and sharability of knowledge bases. Participants will be required to submit their ontologies, including documentation and design considerations, to the Organizers, who will distribute them to all other accepted participants. Users who need ontologies, such as engineering tool developers and enterprise integration people, can submit a request to participate as well, which should include a description of their involvement in the field and their motivation to participate. During the workshop, attendants will be expected to have studied these ontologies and supporting material, and thus be in a position to discuss the merits and problems of each of them. This will be of particular value in those (probably few) cases where competing ontologies exist for the same domain. We know that this is the case for ontologies of engineering measurement units and, possibly, for materials science and engineering design. Thus, the outcome of the workshop may be twofold: on the one hand, an inventory of currently usable ontologies, on the other hand a first cut at a method for evaluating ontologies. The submitted ontologies will be published in the workshop proceedings. Workshop format: The workshop will last one day: Tuesday, August 9, 1994. To facilitate interaction, the number of attendees at the workshop will be limited to 30. Organizing Committee: Nicolaas J.I.
